Sea, Sun & Season
Which coast to swim on, and when to come

Bali's two coasts behave completely differently. The west and south-west — Kuta, Legian, Seminyak, Canggu, Echo Beach — face the open Indian Ocean and carry serious surf and serious rip currents. The east and south-east — Sanur, Nusa Dua, Serangan — sit behind reef and are calm, shallow and much better with small children.

Rip currents
The single biggest physical danger to visitors here, and it does not look dangerous. A rip is a channel of water running back out to sea — often a calmer, darker, flatter-looking gap between breaking waves, which is exactly why people swim in it. If you are caught in one, do not swim against it. Float, raise an arm, and swim parallel to the beach until you are out of the pull, then come in on the breaking waves.
Flags and lifeguards
Swim between the red and yellow flags, on a patrolled beach, and nowhere else. A red flag means the water is closed — it is not advisory, and it is not a challenge. Bali's lifeguards pull people out constantly and they know their beach far better than you do. Do not swim alone, do not swim after a drink, and keep children within arm's reach even in shallow water.
The year
- Dry season
- Roughly April to October — sunniest, best for volcano sunrises and island crossings, busiest in July and August
- Wet season
- Roughly November to March — hot, humid, short heavy afternoon downpours, fuller waterfalls and greener terraces
- Nyepi
- The Balinese day of silence, in March. The whole island stops for 24 hours — the airport closes, nobody goes out, and lights stay low. Ask us for the exact date in your year
- Galungan & Kuningan
- The biggest festival, on the 210-day Balinese calendar rather than a fixed month. Villages fill with penjor poles
- Temperature
- Around 27–32°C all year on the coast, noticeably cooler up at Kintamani and Batur
Earth and fire
Bali is volcanic and sits on an active plate boundary, which is the reason the soil is so rich and the sunrises are so good. Minor tremors happen and are nothing. Agung and Batur are monitored constantly and any restriction is announced well ahead; if it affects a tour we will tell you before you have to ask. Learn where your hotel's stairs are, and if you are on the coast and feel a strong quake, move inland and uphill without waiting to be told.
