2Batuan Temple

Batuan · 28 km · 70–80 min drive · 45 min visit

Great for kids

A thousand-year-old village temple in classic Balinese style — split gates, tiered meru shrines and stone carvings darkened by moss and monsoon. Far quieter than the headline temples, it is the place to actually feel a Balinese temple rather than photograph one.

With children

All ages, and stroller-friendly on the main courtyards. Children must be dressed in the sarong and sash as adults are.

  • A Barong performer in an elaborate gilded lion mask with a red and gold beard, mid-performance on an open-air temple stage, a gamelan orchestra of bronze gongs blurred behind.1

    Traditional Barong & Rangda Dance

Batubulan · 60–75 min from Kuta

    Great for kids

Bali's most famous sacred drama, performed daily with a full gamelan orchestra. Barong, the benevolent lion-like guardian, faces Rangda the widow-witch — an eternal contest between order and chaos that ends in balance rather than victory. Elaborate masks, gilded costumes and the trance-like kris dance make this the ideal introduction to Balinese belief.

  • A Balinese craft workshop bench: half-finished wood carvings and a mask in progress, chisels and mallets laid out in a row, and a cloth of fine silver filigree jewellery beside them.3

Art Village — Celuk, Mas & Ubud

    Celuk–Mas–Ubud · 70–90 min from Kuta

    Kids with care

A chain of specialist villages, each devoted to one craft for generations. In Celuk, silversmiths granulate and solder jewellery at open benches. In Mas, carvers work single blocks of hibiscus and ebony into figures and masks. Around Ubud, painters demonstrate the dense, foliage-filled Batuan style. Every stop includes a live demonstration and the chance to buy directly from the makers.
