13Jeep Sunrise & Hot Spring — Mount Batur

Kintamani · 65 km · 2–2.5 hrs each way · pickup 02:00–02:30

Older kids & up

A 4WD climb across the black lava field of an active volcano to a ridge viewpoint, arriving in darkness for sunrise over Mount Agung and Lake Batur. Afterwards, descend to the natural hot springs on the lakeshore to soak in mineral water at the foot of the crater. All the reward of the Batur sunrise without the two-hour hike.

With children

Realistically from about 8. The 02:00 pickup, the near-15°C summit cold and the rough jeep track defeat most younger children — and the day is finished by noon. The hot springs alone can be booked as a relaxed late-morning trip for families instead.

Good to know

Bring a warm jacket, plus swimwear and a towel for the springs.

  • A coffee plantation tasting flight on a dark wooden board above a jungle valley — a dozen small cups of coloured coffees and teas, with red coffee cherries and cacao pods beside them.4

    Traditional Coffee Plantation

Tegallalang area · 100–130 min from Kuta

    Great for kids

A walk through a working agroforestry garden — cacao, vanilla, cloves, ginger and coffee grown under shade. Watch beans roasted by hand in a clay wok over a wood fire, then sit above the valley for a tasting flight of a dozen teas and coffees, from lemongrass to mangosteen.

  • The Tegallalang rice terraces: emerald paddies stacked in curving steps down a steep valley, narrow earth paths between them and coconut palms along the ridge.5

    Tegallalang Rice Terrace

Tegallalang · 100–130 min from Kuta

    Kids with care

Emerald terraces stacked down a steep valley, irrigated by subak — the cooperative water system Bali has used since the ninth century and now UNESCO-listed. Walk the ridge paths between the paddies, or simply take the view from a terrace café with a coconut in hand.
