A chain of specialist villages, each devoted to one craft for generations. In Celuk, silversmiths granulate and solder jewellery at open benches. In Mas, carvers work single blocks of hibiscus and ebony into figures and masks. Around Ubud, painters demonstrate the dense, foliage-filled Batuan style. Emerald terraces stacked down a steep valley, irrigated by subak — the cooperative water system Bali has used since the ninth century and now UNESCO-listed. Walk the ridge paths between the paddies, or simply take the view from a terrace café with a coconut in hand.
